create your own wanky mission statement
Get clarity, purpose and simplify your decision making
WHAT & WHY
The mission statement gets a bad rap.
Most people know it as those wanky things that big corporations have that usually waffle on about social responsibility when really they are slowly destroying the world.
Yep. Those corporations have done a lot of damage to the term mission statement. But I know from personal experience just how effective they can be.
I have several mission statements.
I have a personal one, and one for each of my businesses and projects. They are all pinned up on the wall and on a daily basis I reconnect with them by reading them aloud.
Because when you are crystal clear on what your mission is, it makes the day to day (and minute to minute!) decisions about what to do next super simple.
When faced with a question about whether I should take on a new project, invest time or money in a new platform or sign up to a new programme, I can simply ask…
“Would this help me fulfil my mission?”
If the answer is no then I don’t do it.
If the answer is yes, then the next question is…
“Is this the most effective thing I can be doing right now to help me fulfill my mission?”
In all honesty, most of the time the answer is ‘no’ to that last question. Because there are a lot of shiny objects along the way to fulfilling one’s mission.
But rather than the activity being a downer because I’m saying no all the time, it is actually rather liberating. Because it means that the things I do focus upon actually get results. And I feel much less like I’m spinning my wheels with very little traction.
